What is Supported Employment?

HomeBlogWhat is Supported Employment?

The history of employment for people with disabilities is a long and complicated one. Disabled people have always existed, and we find examples of disabled people working and contributing to their communities throughout the historical record. Our team at Vocational Solutions of Henderson County strives to help adults with disabilities enter the workforce today, and one of the ways we do that is through supported employment programs. In this article, we’ll provide an overview of these programs and how they work.

What is Supported Employment?

The purpose of supported employment programs is to provide opportunities for adults with severe disabilities to become part of the workforce. Organizations like ours work with employers to find suitable roles for our students, and we assist job seekers with the search and application process.

As part of our supported employment program, we work closely with disabled job seekers to identify what kinds of work they are interested in and to find suitable opportunities for them. We do our best to support the individual in their search, allowing them to make their own decisions as much as possible. Our team works with employers to identify roles where the individual can succeed, and we guide each student through the interview and hiring process.

Following the initial hire, we also offer advice to the individual and their support system to help the person succeed in their new role. In addition, we negotiate with employers to set a suitable schedule for the person to help them succeed in the workplace.
