A Very Merry Christmas Party for Vocational Solutions

Our annual Christmas party was a HUGE success thanks to the hard work of all our staff and clients and some very generous donations from boardmembers Nick Weedman, John Crawford, and Ron Davis. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the clients sang and signed Christmas carols like Go Tell It On The Mountain and The Lord’s Prayer. Jerry has been coming to Vocational Solutions for five years now and loves it. He also loves pepperoni pizza and his favorite show is General Hospital. Jerry is a huge Nascar fan. He has a Nascar video that he watches and he even got to go to a race last month! Happy Birthday Jerry!

VS Awarded Grants for New Computers

It is beginning to feel like Christmas at Vocational Solutions as new computers and software arrive. Thanks to generous grants from the Episcopal Church Women of St. John in the Wilderness and the St. James Charities Foundation, the Adult Developmental Vocational Program has received three new computers, eight new headphones, and software for both the classrooms.

Vocational Solutions offers a computer class through Blue Ridge Community College’s Compensatory Education Program allowing participants to learn how to operate a computer independently. Clients are asked to turn the computers off and on, select programs to run, follow directions, stay on task, and use academic programs. The curriculum from Blue Ridge Community College has just been updated to include websites and technology in other areas of learning including health, math, and reading. This new integrated curriculum requires technology that the classrooms Vocational Solutions had previously been lacking. A few of the older classroom computers did not have internet capabilities and many of them still had floppy drives. The new purchased software is more cognitively appropriate and will better prepare participants for any potential employment opportunities. The Compensatory Education teachers are able to follow the broadened curriculum and utilize innovative technology to increase student learning. Through curriculum based assessment, the classroom teachers will be able to monitor client’s learning and keep track of achievements. Clients are now using more up-to-date software and programs that will grant them more access the new technology that is ever changing in today’s world.

Vocational Solutions still has 5 computers that are near extinction we are asking that if you are replacing your computers this Christmas, please think of us before you throw your old, unwanted computer away.

Kathy has been coming to Vocational Solutions for almost three years now and she loves being able to have a place to come to and to get out of the house! She enjoys the socialization that she gets at Vocational Solutions and is thankful for all her friends and family. Kathy loves to do crafts and her favorite food is fried chicken. Kathy also loves dogs and helps take care of a dog named Summer at Sunnybrook. We’re glad that you’re here too Kathy! Happy Birthday!

Carolyn enjoys going to church with her husband. She has a cat named Abigail that she spends a lot of her time with. She goes to Wal-Mart every week and eats at her favorite place Mc Donald’s. Carolyn loves to draw. She also makes potholders and gives them to people. She enjoys coming to Vocational Solutions and can’t wait to get a job!

Tina likes to trace pictures in her tracing book and does a wonderful job! Tina’s favorite class is ASL. Work is important to Tina as well as her family and church. Tina enjoys playing the saxophone and the recorder. Tina is working on being a master guide in Pathfinders. Tina’s favorite food is Moose Tracks ice cream.

Larry Bell has been coming to work at Vocational Solutions for the last ten years. It is his first steady job and he says that he has enjoyed every minute of working here. When he first started he was shy and apprehensive, not knowing how things would be. Today, he is one of our most outspoken and hardest working clients and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Larry enjoys playing hand held games and watching wrestling. He played on a Special Needs Baseball team this year and is a member of the Kiwanis Aktion Club. Larry’s favorite food is fettucine alfredo and he speaks Spanish as well as English. Larry Bell has the best memory of any employee working at Vocational Solutions. Give him a date and he will remember it forever. Tell him your birthday one time and he will never forget to wish you Happy Birthday. Happy birthday Larry Bell!

Community Foundation Awards Grant to Vocational Solutions

Vocational Solutions of Henderson County has been awarded a grant of $15,000 by the Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Henderson County. According to Jamie Wiener, the grant will be used to replace the roof at Vocational Solutions’ facilities. “Our organization has reduced the trend of escalating losses for three years running, but with many government programs being cut, there is always a need for funding. This grant from the Community Foundation of Henderson County will give us the resources necessary to begin our New Roof Project that will not only lower our energy costs but will also help us continue to provide the best care to our clients and increase our industrial contracts.”

Vocational Solutions of Henderson County has been serving adults with disabilities in Henderson County since 1967 through day programs and vocational rehabilitation. Mike Horton is the Executive Director of Vocational Solutions and he wants to “invite people to come out and take a tour of the facilities and see how Vocational Solutions is changing lives.”

The Community Foundation of Henderson County supports charitable programs in the greater Henderson County area. It was founded in 1982 and administers over 400 funds with assets of over $67 million.

Dancing Fundraiser a Huge Success

Congratulations to Lauren Rogers and Brenda McCleery and the rest of the competitors who participated in Vocational Solutions’ So You Think You Can Dance with the Stars. Roughly 200 people were in attendance as community members danced with professionals to compete for their very own mirrorball trophy. There were also showcase numbers from local dance studios including Vocationl Solutions’ own Scott Domke, who received the only standing ovation of the evening. The event was a huge success and raised over $3,000 for Vocational Solutions. Visit our facebook page to see more photos from the evening.
